Facebook F8 - QBank on tour

Event | Trends | Social media | DAM | Facebook

April 12-13, 2016 Facebook had their 7th almost-annual developer conference F8 at Fort Mason, San Francisco. I was invited to join this two-day event and numerous other meetups, connected to Facebook in some way.

At QBank we’ve had the possibility to upload media directly from our Digital Asset Management (DAM) to Facebook for quite some time now and the integration is getting better and better all the time. But Facebook is so much more than cute pictures of cats and other people's children, food and gym-habits. Mark Zuckerberg started off the first day with a keynote talking about the roadmap for the next 10 years, where video, virtual reality, artificial intelligence and connectivity was the big points.

Artificial Intelligence

“An area of computer science that deals with giving machines the ability to seem like they have human intelligence.”

What is Artificial Intelligence (AI) and why does it apply to QBank? So, QBank stores your media, you enter keywords, description and other types of data to easily find that media again. Now, QBank already reads EXIF* data files and makes it searchable for you, but imagine if QBank could also classify your media for you? Facebook released a new feature just before the conference, that automatically tells you what is being displayed in an image or even in a video.

We have been experimenting with this as well, unfortunately we do not have as big of a research lab as Facebook but rest assure, the functionality will be in QBank in the future as well!

Connectivity

According to Facebook, over 4 billion people have no access to Internet, because they cannot afford it, do not have access to it or simply do not know why you would want to use it. Facebook, together with its organization internet.org wants to give free access to Internet, or at least, what they call “Free Basics Platform”, which includes services like Facebook and governmental pages.

To bring Internet to more people, Facebook have developed several tools, including an airplane. The plane can fly up to 90 days on solar power alone and provide places far off from Internet provider with Internet access. They call that airplane “Aquila”.

What about QBank’s 10 year roadmap?

AI will be coming on hard the following years as well as 360 video, this together with images that will contain even more details and be even larger in file size. I personally think that with all the media that companies are producing, the demand for a DAM will continue to increase. We recognized this back in 2003 when we started the company and now we have more than 13 years of experience in the field. We will continue to keep up with the trends in social media and are excited about the coming ten years alongside Facebook.

*EXIF - Exchangeable image file format is a standard that specifies the formats for images, sound, and ancillary tags used by digital cameras and systems handling image and sound files recorded by digital cameras.
